Ramazan and Bayram

As we are approaching the celebrations for the end of Ramadan this Saturday, May 12, we would like to get to know it better.

Ramadan is the month of fasting, while the two major Muslim feasts in Greece are the Seker Bairam (Eidt al-Fitr) and the Kurban Bairam (Eid al-Adha). Ramadan, from the Turkish Ramazan and the Arab Ramadan, is a religious Muslim holiday of fasting. It is the name of the ninth month of the Muslim year, during which, according to tradition, the Koran was given to people to guide them to their lives.

But did you know that every year Ramadan is celebrated 10 days earlier than the previous year? This is due to the rolling character of the Arab calendar.

Ramadan lasts for a whole month. During this month, it is necessary to abstain from all kinds of food and water from sunrise to sunset. With the setting of the sun, the famous Iftar takes place, that is the dinner of the love of Islam that gives to Faithful people the opportunity to meet, to strengthen their relationship and to express together their gratitude to Allah and their love for one another.

Ramadan is a time to pray, good deeds, and more time with family and friends.

Fasting aims to help Muslims learn self-discipline, self-control, generosity, and patience.

What is Bayram?

Bayram is the Turkish word for national holiday or holiday, which also refers to national and religious holidays. Even major non-Turkish or non-Islamic traditions and celebrations can also be described as Bayram, such as Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Hanukkah, and more.

In Greece, the word bayram refers to the two major Greek Muslim holidays, Seker Bayram (Ind al-Fitr) and Kurban Bayram (Int al-Adha).

Eid al-Fitr begins the day after the end of Ramadan.

Eidal-Adha or Kurban Bairam (the Bairam of Sacrifice) or Grand Bayram is a religious festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide as a celebration of Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael to Allah.
